Running a business that operates out of ones own home sounds like a pretty cool idea, lets face it. Working when and as you want, no commuting, no boss breathing down your neck, no annoying co-workers you have to pretend to have something in common with it all sounds too good to be true, doesnt it?

Well, that may be so, but it is important to remember that starting your own home-based business isnt all sweetness and light. As with everything in life, there are two sides to the story, and you should be as aware of the pitfalls and less attractive aspects of a home-based busin
ess as you are to the more appealing sides of it, before seriously considering it.

On the downside, the fact is that to set up and successfully administer your own home-based business takes a lot of know-how and is not without a sometimes sizeable element of risk. Working from home can bring conflict not just with family members but even with oneself when it comes to time management issues when you are at work and when you are at home, for instance? Too passionate a commitment to your new home business and you run the risk of alienating family members or burning yourself out. Too small a commitment and the work wont get done, resulting in a failed business.

Its a fine line and the question anyone considering a home-based business has to ask themselves is do I have the self-discipline to do the work minus the neck-breathing boss, and do I have the will-power to walk away when necessary?

There is also a loss of job security, a loss of some of the fringe benefits of being employed by someone else (guaranteed holidays, sick days etc). Depending on the kind and the size of the home based business you wish to set up, the freedom that most people looking to work from home are so intent on pursuing could end up being seriously curtailed simply by the enormous amount of extra responsibilities that being in sole charge of a business can bring.

Now, were not trying to put you off here, just put across a few home truths. There are of course many, many advantages to a home based business which, if managed correctly and efficiently, will likely bring the boons most people dream of when considering setting up such a system. Having a more flexible schedule is the first thing on most peoples minds - you control when and as you work, when you start, when you finish, and how many hours you put in; no driving to work or sitting on public transport for hours on end just to get to and from work; with no boss or co-workers, a total removal of the kind of office politics that can cause as much stress as the work itself; a feeling of greater independence and more control over ones personal environment.

Setting up a home-based business is not something to go into lightly or glibly; but if you take a realistic look at the cons as well as the pros, balance the upsides with the downsides, and decide it is still for you, it could well end up being the best move you ever make.
